Dr. Christina Gil
Cristina Gil is an Adjunct Professor and co-coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpretation of Portuguese Sign Language at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (ESE-IPS). She is the co-founder of the Deaf Studies Lab at the Communication and Culture Studies Centre, where she conducts research on Deaf Culture Studies (DSL-CECC).
She graduated in Translation and Interpretation in Portuguese Sign Language from ESE-IPS in 2007. In 2010, she obtained a Master's degree in Deaf Community, Education, and Sign Languages, with a focus on Deaf leadership, from the University of Barcelona (UB). In 2020, she defended her PhD thesis in Culture Studies, titled "Deaftopia: Utopian Representations and Community Dreams by the Deaf," at the Faculty of Human Sciences of the Catholic University of Portugal (FCH-UCP).
Gil worked as a Sign Language interpreter for 13 years, specializing in academic and scientific contexts, as well as educational, performance/artistic, and conference interpreting. She is a co-founder of ANAPI-LG (2011) and has remained actively involved in various working groups within the association. She is currently a member of its General Assembly.
Dr. Beppie van den Bogaerd
Emeritus professor of Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT), University of Amsterdam (UvA), and prof. of Deaf Studies at University of Applied Sciences Hogeschool Utrecht (HU). She received her MA at UvA in Psycholinguistics with a focus on sign language acquisition in deaf and hearing children, which was also the topic of her PhD thesis (2000).
In a previous life she also trained as an English-Dutch interpreter/translator. In 1997 at HU, she started the first BA education in Interpreting/Teaching in NGT in the Netherlands with a great mixed team of deaf and hearing teachers, which was followed by the first Deaf Studies’ master. In 2013 she became professor in NGT at UvA, until retirement in 2019. She (co-)supervised students in various countries in their PhD on diverse topics.
Nowadays active in politics to further accessibility to all in government communication and to support participation, inclusion and diversity.
Dr. Christian Rathmann
Dr. Christian Rathmann is Professor of Sign Language Interpreting at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany.
His professional activities include: (a) research in sign languages (structure, processes and use), sign language interpreting/translation, sign language education and deaf studies; (b) education (BA Deaf Studies and MA Interpreting/Translation as well as professional training for deaf interpreters/translators); and (c) outreach (mainly in the area of sign language rights and recognition, support for young deaf researchers and interpreters/translators as well as co-representation for WASLI Europe).
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. Furthermore, he is a certified interpreter/translator, and is currently an AIIC pre-candidate.
Helder Duarte
Helder Duarte led a committee of various institutions connected to the Deaf community, achieving, in 1997, the constitutional recognition of Portuguese Sign Language (LGP). The following year, he contributed to the official implementation of bilingual education for Deaf people, as well as to the approval of the law regulating the profession of LGP interpreter. He was also a strong advocate for the inclusion of teletext and subtitles on mainstream television channels and promoted the presence of LGP interpreters on Portuguese television.
He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Teaching Portuguese Sign Language (2006–2009) and a Bachelor's Degree in Interpreting Portuguese Sign Language (2013–2015), both from Coimbra Education School (ESE de Coimbra) - Polytechnic of Coimbra, Portugal.
In 2011, during the XVI World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) held in Durban, South Africa, Helder Duarte was honored with the International Prize Medal for Social Merit - 2nd Class, awarded by the World Federation of the Deaf, as well as a diploma recognizing his extraordinary dedication to the cause of Deaf people and his contribution to the development of the WFD.
Dr. Robert Skinner
Dr Robert Skinner is a lecturer and research assistant based in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. In 2014 Robert joined the LINCs team working on the Insign project, Justisigns, Translating the Deaf Self and the SLTI UK census. In 2020 Robert completed his PhD at Heriot-Watt University investigating at video-mediated interpreting in frontline policing contexts.

Robert is a Fellow of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters UK and an experienced BSL/ENG/IS interpreter practitioner of 23 years. His areas of expertise include mental health interpreting, television production interpreting, in-vision public service interpreting (such as news and political broadcast).
